Aust Commando Platoon
9 Aust Infantry Division Commando Platoon
Although HQ I Aust Corps had already left the Middle East, 1 Aust Cdo P1 was raised at Kilo 89 (Palestine) in April 1942 as Corps Troops and although records are scarce, they are believed to have moved to Syria in May, attached to HQ 9 Inf Div. They were rushed to Egypt with the rest of the division in June and are listed as being with the main Div HQ during the defensive battles at El Alamein. In October 1942 they were renamed 9 Aust Infantry Division Commando Platoon (9 Inf Div Cdo Pl). No record remains of their activities, but it is likely that they were used in raids and recon patrols during this period.
It appears that the unit was suspended in November 1942 at the end of 9 Inf Div’s attack at El Alamein and the men returned to their units and 9 Inf Div Cdo Pl was
never reformed before being formally disbanded when 9 Inf Div returned to
Australia.
